When you play the washboard it is more like a percussion instrument than drums. It works best using thimbles at the tips of your fingers. But you can also play the washboard with a drumstick.
The thimble technique allows you to play more complex rhythms.
Some musicians also add little percussion devices to their washboards like cymbals, woodblocks, snares, or even cow bells.
